I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to find a main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

While waiting, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
