I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water valve for your home. If you’re unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour day or night. We will be at your home as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, start mopping up any water, put a bucket to catch any drips, and remove significant things from the affected area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
